What We Check in a Free In-Home Water Test
The basic measurements included in an AJ Alberts visit, their limits, and how separate PFAS testing works.
The free basic in-home test checks hardness, iron, chlorine, pH, total dissolved solids, and alkalinity, plus nitrate for well-water customers. It does not measure PFAS or establish drinking-water safety.
What the measurements tell you
Hardness describes calcium and magnesium content relevant to softening. Iron can help investigate staining. Chlorine is relevant to treatment and taste discussions. pH describes acidity or alkalinity on its measurement scale; alkalinity is a separate measure related to buffering capacity.
Total dissolved solids is an aggregate reading. It does not identify every dissolved substance, and a low reading is not proof that water is safe. Nitrate testing is included in the basic visit for well-water customers; discuss the result and any need for additional laboratory work.
What the visit cannot establish
The basic readings do not detect PFAS, provide a full microbiological panel, or rule out every chemical contaminant. Clear water, pleasant taste, and a hardness reading cannot substitute for appropriate drinking-water testing.

Separate PFAS testing
PFAS testing is available for both municipal-water and private-well customers as a separate paid service. AJ collects and submits the sample and explains the laboratory report. Confirm the package and price when booking; do not assume PFAS is included in the free basic visit.
Laboratory sampling uses the required containers and instructions. Do not bring an ordinary jar of water and assume it can be used for a PFAS analysis.
Prepare for the appointment
Have the utility report or previous well report available if you have one. Note any existing softener or filter, the last service date, and whether the concern affects hot water, cold water, one tap, or the entire house.
The purpose is to make a treatment decision that fits your water. It may be appropriate to service existing equipment, obtain more information, or make no equipment change.
